Designing a Certificate of Completion

The learning environment can automatically generate certificates of completion whenever a learning record is granted to a user for a course. When issued, a copy of the certificate is automatically emailed to the learner as a PDF attachment. They can also retrieve the certificate at any time via their Learning History report.

An instructor or administrator can also use this method to receive an email whenever the a user completes a course.

During the implementation phase, Dual Code may have implemented a certificate of completion for your organization. This is a professional service that we generally recommend to our clients during the implementation of their system.

Step-by-step Guide

To duplicate a certificate of completion and modify it:

  1. Go to Site Administration > Courses > Manage certificates

  2. Click on the "Duplicate" button next to the existing certificate that you want to duplicate

    1. This will generate a copy of the certificate using the exact same name as the original certificate but with the word "(copy)" appended to its title

  3. Click on the "Edit" icon next to the new certificate you created in the step above

  4. Make your changes

    1. If you want to display accreditation information on your certificates, see this article.

  5. Click on the "Save" button at the bottom of the page

Important Notes

  • If you do not have any certificate available to duplicate but you have certificates using the "Simple Certificate" activity within a course, we recommend that you convert the course-level certificate to a system-level certificate by following these steps.

  • You can preview your certificate by clicking on the "Preview" icon next to the certificate in question.

  • The certificate is generated at the same time as the learning record. If the certificate is not attached to the course when the learning record is generated, a certificate will not be issued for that learning record after the fact.

  • If you update the design of a certificate of completion, the new template will be applied to all previously issued certificates within 48 hours. Consequently, when users download a certificate from their Learning History, it will reflect the updated design. If they still see the old design, advise them to wait another day and try downloading it again.

  • It is advised not to delete a certificate of completion template. If a certificate is deleted, a warning will inform you that courses linked to this certificate will no longer issue completion certificates, and users who previously received one will no longer be able to download their certificate from their Learning History.
