Resetting the Password for Multiple Users

There may be times when you need to reset the password for multiple users. Perhaps this is due to a security concern or as a result of a security policy that requires you to reset people's password. While you can reset passwords one user at at time, this article explains how you can reset the password for multiple users at the same time.

Step-by-step Guide

To reset the password for multiple users:

  1. Go to Site Administration > Users > Accounts > Bulk User Actions

  2. Find the users in question using the filters

    1. Once found, move them to the box on the right side of the screen, which is the "All selected" users box

  3. Select the "Reset password" action from the "With selected users..." pulldown menu

  4. Click on "Go"

  5. Click on "Yes" to confirm your action

Once you confirm your action, the selected user's password will be replaced with a random system-generated password and sent to the user via email.

Important Notes

  • The web page lets you select all users, but the system can only reset the password for users who have their password stored in the learning environment. For example, the system can reset the password for users who self-registered, but it cannot reset it for users whose password is managed by an Active Directory server. As such, we recommend that you use the filters (under "Show more..." to select the proper "Authentication" method based on the authentication methods enabled in your system.

  • The message sent to users can be customize using the instructions in Modifying Language Strings.

    • The component for the subject of the email is "core" and the string identifier is "changedpassword".

    • The component for the body of the email is "local_dualcode" and the string identifier is "newpasswordtext".

    • Note that these strings are used when resetting one password at a time and no strictly used for "bulk user actions".
