Granting Learners an Extension Beyond the "Enrolment duration" Date

When using the “Self-enrolment (Advanced)” method, instructors have the ability to set an “Enrolment duration” date. If users self-enrol in the course, that date will be enforced by the learning environment. Once that date is reached, users will automatically lose access to the course. If they want to access it again, they will be prompted to re-enrol. If the course has a fee associated with it, users will be asked to pay once again.

In the event that you do not want to enforce an enrolment duration, we suggest that you either (a) disable the “Enrolment duration” setting in the “Self-enrolment (Advanced)” method, or (b) make it longer than you anticipate. For example, you could in the course description state that the course is only available for 30 days, yet set the enrolment duration to 45 days. Generally speaking, an extension of that sort is welcomed by learners who purchase a course, but it is at your discretion.

In the event that you truly want to grant someone an extension however, the recommendation is to manually enrol users in the course by following this procedure.

Important Notes

  • It is intentional that administrators and instructors cannot delete nor edit a user’s enrolment method if the user enroled using the “Self-enrolment (Advanced)” method.

  • If you manually enrol users in courses, you should set an enrolment duration or an enrolment end date in the manual enrolment method. Otherwise, the user will retain access to the course indefinitely and will never be prompted to pay again (if the course has a fee associated with it).
